What is CTM and why how it change electrical maintenance
In industrial electrical maintenance, many failures do not occur suddenly. Before a shutdown, there is usually a silent process of degradation: connections overheating, components operating outside their optimal conditions, and critical points deteriorating unnoticed.
The problem is that, in many operations, this overheating is only discovered after the panel has already failed, production has already stopped, or the equipment has already been compromised.
This is still the norm in much of the industry: spot thermography, sporadic measurements, and schedule-based maintenance. The result is limited and delayed decision-making, based on momentary snapshots of the actual condition of the assets.
It is in this context that CTM, or Continuous Thermal Monitoring, solutions are changing the way electrical maintenance is approached.
What is CTM?
CTM stands for Continuous Thermal Monitoring.
In practice, this technology allows for the continuous, real-time monitoring of critical points on panels, busbars, connections, and electrical equipment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Unlike conventional thermography, which records thermal conditions at a specific moment, CTM tracks temperature changes over time. This allows for a predictive approach, identifying trends, anomalies, and progressive heating before they develop into critical failures.
What changes in electrical maintenance with CTM?
With continuous thermal monitoring, maintenance is no longer dependent solely on scheduled inspections but instead relies on real-time data regarding the condition of the assets.
This enables a significant shift: moving away from maintenance based solely on a schedule and toward condition-based maintenance.
In practice, CTM helps to:
• Detect abnormal temperature rises before a failure occurs
• Reduce unscheduled downtime
• Build a thermal history of critical assets
• Make decisions based on reliable data
• Contribute to team safety
CTM´s Varixx – ZYGGOT Line
With the ZYGGOT line, the CTM concept comes to the factory floor with technologies designed for continuous thermal monitoring, contact and non-contact measurement, high precision, and integration with all off-the-shelf systems already used by operations and maintenance teams.
ZYGGOT solutions enable real-time monitoring of critical points and integrate this information into environments such as supervisory control systems, SCADA, and industrial platforms, enhancing the team’s analytical and response capabilities.
This means that maintenance teams now have access to continuous thermal data, alarms, historical records, and operational visibility, allowing them to act before a failure compromises production.
