From Corrective to Predictive Maintenance: What Stage Is Your Company At?
Industrial maintenance has evolved. What was once addressed only after a failure began to be planned in advance and, more recently, guided by the actual condition of equipment.
In corrective maintenance, intervention takes place after a problem has already occurred. The equipment fails, operations may be interrupted, and the maintenance team must act quickly to restore functionality. For critical assets, this approach can lead to high costs, productivity losses, and unplanned downtime.
Preventive maintenance aims to reduce these risks through scheduled inspections and interventions. Activities are performed at predefined intervals, regardless of the equipment’s actual condition. Although this approach improves planning, failures may still develop between inspections, while components in good condition may undergo unnecessary maintenance.
Predictive maintenance, on the other hand, monitors the actual behavior of assets. Through the continuous monitoring of variables such as temperature, it becomes possible to identify abnormal trends and signs of degradation before they develop into more serious failures.
In electrical systems, temperature increases may indicate loose connections, oxidation, overloads, imbalances, or component wear. When these changes are identified early, maintenance teams can plan interventions more safely and reduce the risk of unexpected interruptions.
The transition does not need to happen across the entire plant at once. The first step can be identifying the most critical assets, such as electrical panels, MCCs, busbars, transformers, and substations.
The question is not simply which maintenance model is best, but:
What stage is your maintenance strategy at today, and what should the next step be?
