The Varixx AC/DC converter is designed to supply electrical power to brakes using a two-stage two-phase rectifier bridge. In the first stage, called "the call stage", a high voltage is applied to overcome the brake inertia. Then, a lower voltage is maintained to keep the brake on. The converter is connected in parallel with the electric motor output and requires only an electrical command to activate the brake. The call duration time is adjustable between 0.5 and 5 seconds by means of a trimpot. After this period, the voltage is reduced to keep the brake activated. The converter is durable, with a service life of over two hundred million maneuvers, and is resistant to aggressive and dirty environments, as well as vibrations and impacts.
It consists of a two-phase rectifier bridge, two diodes, a thyristor, a trigger module, a removable plug-in command module and a heat sink.
